Tree Spirit Guardian
At the edge of the forest stood a guardian with a body shaped by bark, vines winding across its shoulders, and a small red heart glowing at its chest. Flowers grew around it, opening toward the light.
One afternoon, a weary traveler stopped beneath its branches. She had spent so long being strong for everyone else that she could barely remember what she needed.
“Do you ever get tired of holding everything?” she asked.
The leaves stirred above her.
“Even a tree receives support,” the guardian replied. “The earth holds my roots. Rain reaches me. Sunlight feeds my leaves.”
She sat down among the flowers. Nothing in the forest asked her to explain her exhaustion or earn her place beneath the shade. For a little while, she could simply be there.
Before leaving, she noticed the guardian’s heart. Surrounded by rough bark, it remained open and bright. She thought of someone she trusted, someone she could call when she got home.
“Tree Spirit Guardian” tells a story of care that flows both ways. Those who offer shelter also need nourishment. Those who listen deserve to be heard.
At High Stakes Mental Health Foundation, we value spaces where people can express themselves, find connection, and feel welcome as they are. Through art, a tree can become a companion, a painted heart can hold a message, and a story can help us begin a conversation.
Who or what helps you feel rooted when life becomes overwhelming?
