Black Dahlia — Power and Reinvention

Black Dahlia — Power and Reinvention

For a long time, she thought beginning again meant becoming the person she had been before everything changed.

She searched for her old energy, her old confidence, the version of herself who seemed to carry life so easily. But each attempt to return left her tired. One afternoon, sitting before a canvas, she allowed herself a different question:

What if I give myself room to become someone new?

The black dahlia unfolds around that possibility. Deep, dark petals open into a golden center. Burgundy moves through the surrounding light, and loose petals drift beyond the flower’s edges. In this artwork, they can represent the expectations we release as we discover what we want to keep.

Reinvention can begin quietly. Asking for help. Making time to create. Setting a boundary. Finding something we enjoy without needing to be good at it.

For someone whose days revolve around serving others, even a small space of their own can feel unfamiliar. A canvas offers somewhere to begin—with a color, a mark, a feeling that does not yet have words.

At High Stakes Mental Health Foundation, we believe people deserve opportunities for creative expression and connection through difficult seasons. Art can offer room to explore who we are and who we are becoming, at our own pace.

Black Dahlia — Power and Reinvention invites us to imagine a future that has room for all we have lived through—and for possibilities we have not yet discovered.

What part of yourself would you like to make room for again?
